Visiting Altenburg Bamberg Castle – a complete guide

Altenburg Bamberg’s history and background

Bamberg Castle dates from the 11th century and has an interesting story. For the first almost 150 years, it was not inhabited and served only as a defense in times of danger.

Throughout the years, the castle became the residence of the bishops, was burnt down, and became a prison.

After that, the castle fell in disgrace, was abandoned, and slowly decayed. Eventually, in the 1800s, a famous Bamberg physician acquired Altenburg and started its restoration.

At the present time, the Altenburg Association deals with the preservation of the castle complex.

The most notable architectural features

Altemburg Bamberg Castle
Bamberg Castle Palace

As we approached the castle, we found it impressive because of its location perched on one of Bamberg’s six hills.

The architecture is not something out of the ordinary, but some features are worth seeing.

The Chapel at Altenburg Bamberg

Bishop Otto I built the first Chapel in 1124, but the present one dates from 1834.

The Fountain is 30 meters deep and dates from 1880. It is a picturesque spot in the castle’s garden, one where you can stop and throw a coin, or just take a picture.

The Tower is the only remaining such structure, is 33 meters high, and dates from the 13th century.

The current palace is a little over 100 years old and was built on the partially preserved cellars of the original house. You should definitely see the knights’ hall, which is preserved in its original form.

What can you expect when touring Altenburg Castle?

touring Bamberg Castle

Address: 96049 Bamberg, Germany

Opening hours: 9 AM – 9 PM

Cost: free entrance to the castle grounds, but you must book a tour if you want to see the interiors

We went on our own to visit the castle and could only walk inside its gardens and climb on the walls.

However, if you want to go on a guided tour and learn about the castle’s 900 years, you can book a tour online here.

A local organization holds the tours, which are held in German and English. You will learn about the defense and weaponry of centuries past and enjoy a beautiful view of the city from the highest of Bamberg’s seven hills.

We crossed the stone bridge, walked around the palace, climbed the stone walls, and admired the beautiful surroundings.

Are there any dining options at or near the castle?

Castle terrace

Officially, there is a restaurant inside of the castle. However, when we visited in 2024, the restaurant appeared temporarily closed.

Nevertheless, you should follow the local events organized inside the castle’s walls. For example, they organize the Wine Festival annually in June/July.

Also, several other concerts and events occur at the Altenburg Bamberg throughout the year. Before your visit, you can check out the annual program on their official site.

Unfortunately, because of its somewhat secluded location, no restaurants are close to the castle. The best option would be to eat in Bamberg’s Old Town and climb to the castle afterward.

What other attractions are near Altenburg Bamberg?

Bamberg old Town

The Old Town of Bamberg is not too far away from Altenburg Bamberg, and everyone should take at least a stroll along its cobbled stone streets. We loved Bamberg so much that we returned several times to discover its every corner. If you don’t know what to do or see, we have an itinerary here.

Another perfect way to spend time is by walking along the Waldlehrpfad Altenburg. Right next to the castle is a small park with a beautiful view.

Another great spot is the Aussichtspunkt Kirchen Bamberg, from which you can admire Bamberg’s skyline from above.

What is the best time of year to visit?

linden tree at the castle

We visited in June and July when the roses bloomed, and we absolutely loved it. A linden tree was filled with flowers, and the whole place smelled magnificently.

Spring and fall in Bamberg are equally charming. Just imagine the colors and flavors enchanting your senses on a stroll at the Altenburg Bamberg.

Despite the cold, I’m sure winter can also be beautiful, with the snow-covered hills around the castle.

How to get there

Even though you must walk or take public transportation to Altenburg Bamberg, it won’t be challenging.

We went there by car and stopped at the nearest parking. From there, we climbed a few stairs hidden in the woods and reached the castle in a few minutes.

If you are not traveling by car, there are two options to consider. By the way, if you need to rent a car, we recommend Discover Cars. It is an aggregator that will help you save up to 70%.

Walking to the castle from Bamberg Old Town takes around 40 minutes. However, it involves a bit of climbing.

The other option is to take the bus. You will still walk.

Take one of the below bus options (901/908/991) from Bamberg Schranne and get off at Bamberg Laurenziplatz.

If you want to walk a little less, take bus 908 from Bamberg ZOB and get off at Bamberg Hezilostr.

Unfortunately, no better option exists, and no bus will bring you closer to the castle.

Conclusion

In conclusion, even though Bamberg Castle does not offer so much to do and see as compared to other castles in Bavaria, we still think it is worth a visit. We enjoyed our trip there and would go back for an organized tour.
